The second phase of the Dubai Heritage Rehabilitation Programme has begun, bringing back to life 35 sites and buildings built between the 1960s and 1990s.
These include the oldest zoo in Jumeirah, the Clock Tower, the Rashid Tower, the Dubai Petroleum building, Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport, the main building of Dubai Municipality, the Palace of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed, the building of the Dubai Land Department and the Dubai Law Courts building.
As His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, said , the current government has a responsibility to celebrate history and protect architectural treasures for future generations.
The sites that are set to undergo renovation are those that mark decades of progress and symbolise the beginning of Dubai’s renaissance. Situated in the heart of modern Dubai, the sites connect the city’s past with its future aspirations.
The project, according to the Crown Prince, is aimed at ensuring cultural continuity, demonstrating how history has influenced the development and formation of the emirate and its transformation into one of the most popular tourist centers in the world.
The first phase saw the restoration of 17 archaeological sites, 14 historic areas and 741 buildings, including in the Al Shindagha, Naif and Al Fahidi areas. The second phase of the project will bring the total number of sites to be restored to 807.
